About Rakcham Village

The Village Most Travellers
Drive Straight Past

Rakcham sits 17 kilometres from Sangla on the road to Chitkul — which means everyone passes it. Hardly anyone stops. The dark timber houses stack up the hillside above the Baspa River, surrounded by orchard terraces and stands of blue pine, presenting one of the most photogenic village compositions in the Baspa Valley.

It is a working agricultural village of around a hundred families, unchanged in its essential rhythms despite the slow trickle of tourism up the valley. What distinguishes Rakcham from other Kinnauri villages is the density and quality of its traditional architecture, the presence of a traditional gharat water mill still in occasional use, and an atmosphere of authentic village life that is increasingly rare in the more heavily visited parts of the valley.

Rakcham has no hotels, guesthouses, or formal tourist infrastructure. It is a day-visit destination — but those 45 minutes to 2 hours spent walking its lanes are among the most rewarding of any Kinnaur itinerary.

What to See

Places to Explore

⚙️
The Gharat Water Mill
A traditional horizontal water mill — one of the oldest functioning examples in the Baspa Valley. Powered by diverted stream water turning a wooden paddle shaft. May be in operation during grain harvest (September–October).
🏠
Kath-Kuni Architecture
Among the finest traditional domestic architecture in the Baspa Valley. Carved geometric patterns, sun motifs, and deity figures worked into deodar window frames and balcony railings by craftsmen long gone.
🍎
Apple Orchards
Older, more gnarled and untamed than the orchards closer to Sangla. Walking through in October, when apples are ripe and light is golden, is one of those quietly perfect Kinnaur experiences.
⛩️
Village Temple
A small stone-and-wood temple at the upper end of the village dedicated to the local deity — prayer flags strung overhead, the sound of the stream below creating an atmosphere of natural reverence.
📸
River Bank View
Stop at the wooden bridge below the village before ascending. The view upward — houses stacked against orchard terraces, pines above, Baspa River below — is one of the best landscape compositions in the valley.
🚶
Village Lane Walk
Twenty minutes of slow walking through Rakcham's tight lanes reveals more about traditional Kinnauri life than two hours in a larger village. Look at the joinery. Notice the firewood stacking. Greet the people.

Local Cuisine

Food to Try

🫓
Siddu
Ask a homestay or family in Rakcham if you can taste freshly made siddu — the steamed wheat bread stuffed with local ingredients. Informal, genuine, and far better than any café version.
🍎
Fresh Apples
September–October, apple trees in Rakcham are heavy with fruit. Any resident will likely offer you one. The variety is mostly Royal Delicious and Red Delicious — crisp, sweet, and nothing like what reaches Delhi.
Mountain Tea
The small dhabas in Sangla prepare packed teas — bring a thermos from your accommodation and drink it overlooking the village from the river bank. The scenery enhances the flavour considerably.

Getting There

How to Reach Rakcham Village

From Sangla

17 km · 30 min

Drive upstream on the Sangla–Chitkul road. The village appears on the right as you approach 17km from Sangla town. Tell your driver in advance — the turn-off is easy to miss.

From Chitkul

9 km · 15 min

Rakcham is only 9 km from Chitkul on the return drive — combine both in a single day trip from Sangla. Stop on the way up for morning light, and again on the return for afternoon light.

💡 Tip: The best time to photograph Rakcham is 8–10am when morning light falls on the east-facing timber facades. Return in the afternoon for different light on the western faces. Same village, completely different photographs.
