About Kinnaur

A Living Bridge
Between Cultures

Carved between the mighty Sutlej and Baspa rivers, Kinnaur emerges as one of India's most pristine Himalayan districts — a land where ancient trade routes once carried salt and wool between Tibet and the plains below.

Here, at altitudes ranging from 2,000 to over 6,000 metres, terraced apple orchards cascade down mountain slopes while prayer flags flutter against snow-capped peaks of the Kinner Kailash range. Hindu deities are worshipped alongside Buddhist protector spirits. Ancient wooden temples stand beside colourful monasteries.

Standing at the end of the road in Chitkul, looking toward Tibet, I understood for the first time what it means to be at the edge of the world. Nothing prepares you for it.

We arrived in Sangla for two days and stayed for two weeks. The orchards, the temples, the Baspa River — and the people most of all. It completely rewired something in me.

The kath-kuni wooden houses of Rakcham stopped me mid-sentence. Nobody talks about that village. Please don't tell everyone — let it stay a secret a little longer.
